General Enforcement
What does By-law Enforcement do?
By-law Enforcement helps ensure that Township by-laws are followed by residents, property owners, businesses, and visitors. The goal of enforcement is to promote public safety, maintain community standards, and help preserve the quality of life within the Township.
Is enforcement complaint-driven?
Yes. Most by-law investigations begin when a complaint is received from a resident or property owner. However, officers may also respond proactively when there are immediate safety concerns or visible violations affecting the community.
When should I contact the OPP?
Please contact the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) for emergencies, criminal activity, dangerous situations, or any immediate threat to public safety. By-law Enforcement does not handle criminal matters.
Officer Authority
Can a By-law Officer enter my property?
Under applicable legislation, By-law Officers may enter onto property at reasonable times for the purpose of conducting an investigation. Officers are not permitted to enter a private dwelling without consent or legal authorization.
Can officers issue tickets?
Yes. By-law Officers have the authority to issue tickets, fines, orders, and other enforcement measures where permitted under municipal bylaws and provincial legislation.
Alternative Enforcement Agencies
Depending on the nature of the concern, Township By-law Enforcement may not be the appropriate agency to contact. In some situations, another organization or enforcement authority may have jurisdiction or be better equipped to respond.
To help residents report concerns more efficiently, we have provided a list of important agencies and contacts that may assist with matters related to policing, environmental concerns, hunting & fishing regulations, and other concerns.
